Restore Mobility with Restorative Yoga Classes

Want to keep your body supple and flexible this spring whilst rejuvenating your personal wellbeing during this challenging time? Yoga is the way to go, but with so many different styles to choose from, some lend themselves better to restoring your mobility than others. That’s where restorative yoga can work wonders.

What is Restorative Yoga?

Restorative yoga is a practice where postures are held for long periods of time. This targets the connective tissue and encourages deep, contemplated relaxation of the body, mind, and spirit. This form of yoga is suitable for all levels, from first-time beginners to advanced yoga enthusiasts alike.

Here’s how it works:

Each pose is normally held for anywhere between one and five minutes, so it’s quite the contrast to your typical Vinyasa class wherein poses are quick and almost aerobic in nature, and are intended to work up a sweat. Props like blocks, blankets and belts are used to support the long holds of the postures.

What Are the Benefits of Restorative Yoga?

Repose Yoga in Mount Waverley shares many of the wonderful health benefits that other forms of yoga offer, but what sets it apart from the pack? Firstly, the purpose of restorative yoga is to restore the body’s mobility. With each posture being held for an extended period of time, the body’s connective tissues and ligaments are targeted instead of the muscles. Lengthening the body’s complex system of connective tissue eventually permits the larger muscles groups to stretch and lengthen more effectively.

Secondly, restorative yoga restores the body’s parasympathetic nervous system. With long holds coupled with an awareness of the breath, the body enters a state of calm relaxation. This then affects the mind as it enters a calm, stress-free state. This makes it an excellent way to decompress after a stressful day.

The slow movements in a restorative class can also be highly beneficial for restoring mobility and flexibility after surgery or after an injury.

Restorative Yoga Classes at Repose Yoga

At Repose Yoga in Mount Waverley, our restorative yoga classes are ideal for anyone of any skill level or age, so it’s certainly a popular way to get your feet wet (not literally, of course) whilst learning more about yoga, and it’s equally therapeutic for advanced yoga students as well as those recovering from injuries or surgery.

The restorative class is held every Wednesday at 6:30pm. The duration of the class is one hour, which we find is ideal for students to achieve meaningful progress without taking up too much precious time from a busy day. This class is offered both on Zoom and in-studio for your convenience.

Zoom yoga is an excellent way to practise yoga, with some unique benefits such as the possibility to create your own yoga studio from the comfort of your own home. In-studio, however, remains a popular traditional way of getting hands-on instruction in the small-sized classes.
