My Experience as a Yogi…Yoga and Me

I’d always heard of Yoga but was drawn to it when I was pregnant with my first child.  Before that to me Yoga was for flexible people who would be able to hold difficult asanas (poses) but to my surprise it changed my life and made my pregnancy a breeze.  I wasn’t just able to connect with my body, but my mind and my breath too. Physically, I was able to sleep a lot better, my heartburns also reduced considerably, mentally I was far less stressed.  After the arrival of my first born, I had tried to keep up with Yoga every now and then. Knowing how positive I felt through my first pregnancy, I tried to keep up with Yoga through my second one. I wasn’t regular but tried whatever I could, sometimes signed up for lunch time Yoga sessions at work and sometimes tagged along with friends over the weekend.   Having moved countries, I struggled to find a guru (coach/teacher/instructor) that I resonated with and without regular yoga lessons though I felt like there was a part of me missing.

When I finally resumed my yoga classes regularly, I felt like was able to reconnect with my body, my mind and my breath.  It’s not just a good stretch but for me it’s mindfulness too.  With regular practice, slowly but surely my flexibility increased, I started to become more aware of my body and my breath.   Whether the pigeon pose or downward dog, I always find a sense of peace and calm when I surrender my body to mother earth.  To me my Yoga sessions are like a container where I can heal myself body and soul one breath at a time.  Although I am not a big fan of certain asanas, I am a big advocate for Yoga, whether it is done as just a physical activity or as mindfulness activity. In my experience, the benefits are multifold when it’s done with intention and mindfully.  I also feel that finding a guru that you connect with and who can understand you is very important.  I am fortunate to have found a guru in Puneeta at Repose Yoga who patiently listens to us and gracefully and sometimes forcefully coaches us through session after session.
