16 Quirky Habits That Prove You’ve Embraced the Yoga Life | Repose Yoga Studio in Mount Waverley

Welcome to the whimsically woven world of yoga, where the transformation from a novice to a yogi not only reshapes your body but subtly sneaks its way into your daily life in the most unexpected, often amusing, ways. If you’ve ever caught yourself in a spontaneous tree pose while brushing your teeth or hosted a mini-meditation session in the midst of a chaotic workday, you’re not alone. The journey into yoga is filled with quirky twists and turns, each one a delightful reminder of how deeply this ancient practice can influence our modern lives.

In this light-hearted blog, I’ve talked about quirky and sometimes bewildering habits that emerge as you go deeper into your yoga practice. From stealthily adjusting your posture during mundane tasks to developing a new language with your body and breath, the nuances of becoming a yogi are as enriching as they are entertaining. Whether you’ve just rolled out your mat for the first time or you’re a seasoned practitioner, the yoga lifestyle has a unique way of spilling over into the corners of your existence, sometimes without you even noticing.

If you can identify with any of the 16 quirky habits, then that’s definitely a signal that you’re embracing the yoga life with arms wide open (and possibly in a Warrior II stance). Prepare to nod in agreement, laugh at yourself, and maybe even recognize a few of these idiosyncrasies in your own life.

1. Finding Grace in Awkward Places – Like that time you caught yourself stretching “just a little too elaborately” at the grocery store, reaching for the lowest shelf with a squat that was more about lengthening than lifting, or taking a tiptoe balance pose to grab that top-shelf item. Yoga turns even grocery shopping into a practice session.

2. The Trust Fall of Yoga – Developing a slight trust issue with instructors (like me) who claim “Just five more breaths in Chair Pose,” and you’re pretty sure they mean dog years. I know you can relate to this; I see you roll your eyes at me during Chair Pose and other poses all the time.

3. Aesthetic Alignment – Catching yourself aligning your mat with extreme precision to the floor tiles. Again, I may have something to do with this in particular.

4. The Stealthy Sit – Realizing you’ve automatically transitioned into a cross-legged position during a Zoom meeting, as if your desk chair was just another place for a hip-opening asana.

5. The Irony of Zen Rush – Rushing to make it to your yoga class on time, embodying stress so that you can later embody calm, and knowing the irony is just a part of the path.

6. Public Ujjayi Scenes – That moment you decide to engage in a deep ujjayi breath while waiting in line and earning some concerned looks because you sound a tad like Darth Vader scouting for rebels.

7. Developing a Thick Skin – Feeling a mix of embarrassment and gratitude when your teacher discreetly corrects your left for your right, saving you from a public mix-up of your limbs. This is then followed by a level of thick skin when the teacher publicly starts telling you to use the other right.

8. The Cat-Cow Pitstop – When a long drive turns your car into a makeshift yoga studio because your back is screaming for a cat-cow stretch right there on the shoulder of the freeway.

9. The Last-Minute Letdown – Experiencing the unique despair when a last-minute work meeting, or a broken-down train steals away your chance of making it to class, and with it, your shot at inner peace for the evening.

10. Life on a Balance Beam – Incorporating balancing acts like the tree or warrior pose into your daily routine, be it while brushing your teeth or applying your skincare, because why waste a moment? The picture, by the way, is of me right after applying a serum and waiting for it to absorb before slapping on the next.

11. Leggings = Formal Wear – The day you realize that jeans have become your “dress up” clothes, all because your wardrobe hasn’t seen anything but leggings since 2015.

12. The Flexibility Comparathon – Casually conversing with fellow yogis about how tight your hips and hamstrings feel, as if it’s the most absorbing topic at the brunch table.

13. Yoga Night Clearance – When your entire family, friends, and colleagues start understanding that your yoga evening is your yoga evening, and don’t book your time on that night for anything else.

14. Teacher Panic – The mini heart attack you have when you find out your favourite instructor is on a break, making you wonder how you’ll survive their vacation.

15. Exponential Results – Slowly but surely understanding that irrespective of how many minutes you spend on your mat, it magically makes every subsequent minute of your day infinitely more manageable.

16. The Forgotten Cleanse – The sheepish admission that you’ve let your yoga mat turn into a biohazard because somehow, it’s been 89 classes since its last cleanse.

Yoga: A Delightfully Quirky Way of Life

Ultimately, the journey of yoga is a layered experience that harmoniously blends the physical, mental, and spiritual threads. As you progress along this path, you’ll find yourself weaving in quirky habits and idiosyncrasies that become an integral part of your life. Embrace these delightful nuances with open arms and a playful spirit, for they are the very essence of what it means to embody the yoga lifestyle fully. When you can laugh at yourself while effortlessly flowing between downward dog and the demands of daily life, you’ll know you’ve truly mastered the art of living yoga.
